Pre School Poems

Welcome to the Pre school poems page where you will find simple, short poems for younger children and those at pre school, as an introduction to poetry to help with reading, punctuation and wordplay. These poems can be used at nursery, kindergarten, reception, years 1, 2, 3 and above and in both key stage 1 and 2.

The topics are interesting to children and the rhymes are simple and sometimes even funny. Who says poetry at school has to be dull?

Under the Sea

Beneath the waters
Green and cool
The mermaids keep
A swimming school.

The oysters trot,
The lobsters prance,
The dolphins come
To join the dance.

But the jellyfish
Who are rather small
Can't seem to learn
The steps at all.

Marchette Chute

Five Little Houses

Five little children,
Hand in hand,
Went to dig
In the yellow sand.

Five little castles,
Trim and neat,
Soon were standing
At their feet.

Five little starfish,
Standing near,
Said, "Five little
houses,
Let's live here!"

Zoo Dream

I dreamed I went
To the zoo one day.
All the animals
Came out to play.

There were five donkeys dancing,
Four crocodiles clapping
Three rhinos roaring,
Two giraffes giggling
And one seal snoring!

Weather

Dot a dot dot, dot a dot dot
Spotting the window pane.
Speck a speck speck
Tapping the window frame.
Slosh a slosh slosh
Slither and slide
A puddle to jump in -
Watch how I glide!

Homemade Gingerbread

Stir a bowl of
gingerbread,
Smooth and spicy brown.
Roll it with a rolling pin,
Up and up and down.
With a cookie cutter,
Make some little men.
Put them in the oven,
Till half past ten.

Bonfire Night

In the night time darkness,
In the night time cold,
Did youspot a catherine wheel
Raining showers of gold?

Did you watch a rocket
Go zoom into the sky?
And hear a crackle
As the sparkles lit up the guy?

In the night time darkness,
In the night time cold,
Did you clutch a sparkler
As it scatteres stars of gold?

Fireworks Poem

The 5th of November
You have to remember

The Catherine wheels went bang
And the others squealed and sang
On fireworks night

The 5th of November
You have to remember

The bonfire crackles with wood
Like it should
On fireworks night

The 6th of November
You have to remember
The lovely night before!
WOW!

Little silver airplane
Up in the sky,
Where are you going to
Flying so high?
Over the mountains
Over the sea
Little silver airplane
Please take me!

Mixing colours

Mix red and blue for purple
Mix red and white for pink
Mix red and black and yellow
And you'll get brown I think!

Why don't you mix some colours?
Mix two or three or four
You might justmix a colour
No-one's ever mixed before.

My Dog Fred

I have a dog
His name is Fred.
He won't play fetch.
He won't play dead.

He won't shake hands
or sit or stay
or bark or beg
or run or play.

He won't roll over,
shake or crawl.
In fact, he won't
do tricks at all.

When folks ask why
I tell them that's
because my dog
was raised by cats.

Ferryboats

Over the river,
Over the bay.
Ferryboats travel
Every day.

Most of the people
Crowd to the side
Just to enjoy
Their ferryboat ride.

Watching the seagulls,
Laughing with friends,
I'm always sorry
When the ride ends.
